Saint Aelred’s Day
All are invited to celebrate the Feast of Saint Aelred of Rievaulx on Saturday, January 11, with a Holy Eucharist at 6:30 pm!
Saint Aelred, a 12th-century Cistercian monk and abbot of Rievaulx Abbey in England, holds special significance in the Episcopal Church in our advocacy for the full inclusion of LGBTQ+ individuals in the Church.
Aelred is best known for his theological writings, particularly Spiritual Friendship, which explores the sanctity and spiritual significance of deep, loving relationships. Though Aelred lived in a very different cultural context, his reflections on love and friendship resonate with the experiences of LGBTQ+ Christians today. His emphasis on love, compassion, and inclusivity aligns with the values cherished by the broader Episcopal Church as it seeks to welcome and affirm LGBTQ+ people.
Saint Aelred is for many Episcopalians the patron saint for LGBTQ+ rights and full inclusion in the life and ministry of the Church. In his writings, Aelred reflects on the love of God and the unity of Christ's Body. His life and work continue to inspire those advocating for inclusion within the Church.
Come join us as we honor Saint Aelred’s legacy and celebrate God’s boundless love together in worship and fellowship!
